  • Protein Building Blocks: Understanding Amino Acids
    Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are organic molecules that contain a central carbon atom bonded to four groups:

    1. Amino group (-NH2): This group is basic.

    2. Carboxyl group (-COOH): This group is acidic.

    3. Hydrogen atom (-H):

    4. Side chain (R group): This is what varies between different amino acids and determines their unique properties.

    There are 20 common amino acids that are used to build proteins. They can be combined in various sequences to create a vast array of different protein structures and functions.

    In addition to the amino acids, proteins may also contain other elements, such as:

    * Sulfur: Found in some amino acids like cysteine and methionine, which are important for protein structure and function.

    * Phosphorous: Can be added to proteins through phosphorylation, which can regulate their activity.

    * Iron: Found in certain proteins like hemoglobin, which is responsible for carrying oxygen in the blood.

    So, while the primary building blocks of proteins are amino acids, these can be further modified with other elements to influence protein structure and function.
