Producers are autotrophs, meaning they can make their own food. They do this through photosynthesis, using sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugars (energy) and oxygen.
Examples of producers include:
* Plants (trees, flowers, grasses)
* Algae (both microscopic and large seaweed)
* Phytoplankton (microscopic algae in the ocean)
* Cyanobacteria (single-celled bacteria that can photosynthesize)
Producers are essential to every food web because they provide the initial source of energy that flows through the entire system. All other organisms in the food web, including herbivores, carnivores, and decomposers, rely on the energy captured by producers.
