  • Understanding mRNA Codons: Decoding the Genetic Code
The three-base sequence in mRNA is called a codon.

A codon is a sequence of three nucleotides that codes for a specific amino acid during protein synthesis. There are 64 possible codons, but only 20 amino acids, meaning that some amino acids are coded for by multiple codons.

For example, the codon AUG codes for the amino acid methionine and also serves as the start codon for protein synthesis.
