    Living blood cells are called blood cells or formed elements.

    There are three main types of blood cells:

    * Red blood cells (erythrocytes): These cells carry oxygen throughout the body.

    * White blood cells (leukocytes): These cells fight infection and disease.

    * Platelets (thrombocytes): These cells help to stop bleeding by forming blood clots.
