  • The Discovery of Cells: Robert Hooke and the First Observations
Cells were first identified in cork by Robert Hooke in 1665.

Hooke was examining a thin slice of cork under a microscope and observed small, box-like compartments which he called "cells" due to their resemblance to the cells of a honeycomb. While these were not living cells, as they were the empty cell walls of dead plant cells, they were the first observation of a basic unit of life.
