    Genes that tend to be inherited together are said to be linked.

    This means that they are located close to each other on the same chromosome. During meiosis, when chromosomes are shuffled and recombined, linked genes are less likely to be separated by crossing over. As a result, they are more likely to be passed on to offspring together.
