  • Microbial Disease Categories: Infectious vs. Non-Infectious
The two main categories of disease that microbes can deliver are:

    1. Infectious diseases: These are caused by pathogens, which are microbes that can invade and multiply within the body. Examples include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. They cause disease by damaging tissues, interfering with normal cell function, or producing toxins.

    2. Non-infectious diseases: These are not caused by pathogens. Instead, they are caused by factors like genetics, lifestyle, or environmental exposures. While microbes may play a role in triggering or worsening these diseases, they are not the primary cause. Examples include autoimmune diseases, cancer, and heart disease.

It's important to note that some diseases can have both infectious and non-infectious components. For example, a bacterial infection can lead to complications like pneumonia, which can be further exacerbated by underlying conditions like asthma.
