Here's how it works:
* Amino acids have a central carbon atom bonded to an amino group (NH2), a carboxyl group (COOH), a hydrogen atom (H), and a side chain (R).
* Peptide bond formation occurs when the carboxyl group of one amino acid reacts with the amino group of another amino acid.
* This reaction releases a molecule of water (H2O) and forms a peptide bond (CO-NH).
This process can continue, linking many amino acids together to form a polypeptide chain. Polypeptide chains can then fold into complex three-dimensional structures to form proteins.
