  • Protist Classification: Understanding the Three Main Categories
Scientists group protists into three main categories based on their mode of nutrition:

    1. Photoautotrophs: These protists make their own food through photosynthesis, like plants. Examples include algae like diatoms and dinoflagellates.

    2. Heterotrophs: These protists obtain their food by consuming other organisms. Examples include amoebas, paramecia, and slime molds.

    3. Mixotrophs: These protists combine both photoautotrophic and heterotrophic modes of nutrition. They can produce their own food through photosynthesis but can also consume other organisms. Examples include euglena.
