  • Robert Hooke's Discovery: The First Observation of Plant Cells
    Robert Hooke observed the cell walls of plant cells.

    He did this using a crude microscope and looked at thin slices of cork. He saw tiny compartments that reminded him of the cells in a monastery, and he named them "cells".

    While he didn't see the full structure of a plant cell, his observations were the first to reveal the compartmentalized nature of living organisms.
