Here's why:

* Phloem: This is the living tissue that carries sugars (food) throughout the tree. It's located just beneath the bark.

* Bark: This is the protective outer layer of the tree that consists of dead phloem cells, cork cambium, and sometimes other tissues.

As the tree grows, new phloem is produced beneath the old, and the old phloem dies and becomes part of the bark.
