  • Prokaryotic Cells: Key Features & Unique Characteristics
A unique feature of prokaryotic cells is the lack of a nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles.

    Here's why this is significant:

    * Genetic material: Prokaryotic DNA is located in a region called the nucleoid, which is not enclosed by a membrane. This means the genetic material is directly in contact with the cytoplasm.

    * Organelles: Unlike eukaryotic cells, prokaryotes lack organelles like mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, and lysosomes. These functions are carried out by the cell membrane and other specialized structures within the cytoplasm.

This lack of internal compartmentalization is a defining characteristic of prokaryotic cells and distinguishes them from eukaryotic cells.
