  • Why Can't Animals Produce Sugar? The Role of Chloroplasts
Animals are unable to make sugar (glucose) because they lack the chloroplasts.

Chloroplasts are the organelles in plant cells where photosynthesis takes place. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create glucose (sugar) and oxygen.

Animals, on the other hand, obtain their sugar by consuming plants or other animals that have eaten plants.
