  • Fungi & Algae: Why They Can't Be Combined into One Plant
There isn't a plant that is a cross between fungi and algae. Here's why:

    * Different Kingdoms: Fungi and algae belong to entirely different kingdoms of life. They have distinct evolutionary histories, cellular structures, and ways of obtaining nutrients.

    * Symbiotic Relationships: While fungi and algae don't interbreed, they can form very important symbiotic relationships. The most famous example is lichen, where a fungus and an alga live together in a mutually beneficial partnership. The alga provides food through photosynthesis, and the fungus provides structure and protection.

So, while a "fungi-algae hybrid" doesn't exist, the combination of these two organisms in lichens is a fascinating example of how different life forms can cooperate.
