  • Understanding Gametes: The Role of Haploid Reproductive Cells
    Reproductive cells containing only one copy of each gene are called gametes.

    Here's why:

    * Haploid: Gametes are haploid, meaning they have half the number of chromosomes compared to normal body cells (somatic cells).

    * Meiosis: Gametes are produced through a specialized cell division process called meiosis. Meiosis involves two rounds of division, resulting in four haploid daughter cells from a single diploid parent cell.

    * Fertilization: During fertilization, two gametes (one from each parent) fuse to form a zygote. The zygote is diploid, meaning it has a full set of chromosomes (one copy from each parent).

    Examples of gametes:

    * Sperm (male gamete)

    * Egg (female gamete)
