  • Vacuoles: Structure, Function, and Role in Cells
A small cavity within the cytoplasm that stores food is called a vacuole.

While vacuoles are often associated with plant cells due to their large central vacuole, they are also found in animal cells, albeit smaller and more numerous. They play a vital role in:

    * Storing food: They can hold nutrients, water, and other molecules.

    * Maintaining cell shape: The pressure from water within the vacuole helps maintain the rigidity of plant cells.

    * Waste disposal: Some vacuoles can store waste products before they are expelled from the cell.

    * Regulation of turgor pressure: This refers to the pressure exerted by the cell contents against the cell wall.

So, while the term "food storage" is not entirely wrong, it is a simplification of the diverse functions of vacuoles.
