  • Understanding Binomial Nomenclature: The Genus in Scientific Names
The first word in a two-name organism is called the genus.

This system of naming organisms is called binomial nomenclature, and it was developed by Carl Linnaeus. The genus name is always capitalized, while the second word, the species, is lowercase.

For example, in the scientific name *Homo sapiens*, "Homo" is the genus and "sapiens" is the species.
