  • How Trees Make Food: The Role of Leaves & Photosynthesis
The part of the tree that makes food is the leaves.

    Here's how it works:

    * Photosynthesis: Leaves contain a green pigment called chlorophyll. This pigment captures energy from sunlight.

    * Carbon Dioxide and Water: The leaves take in carbon dioxide from the air through tiny pores called stomata. They also absorb water from the roots.

    * Sugar Production: The chlorophyll uses the energy from sunlight to combine carbon dioxide and water, creating a simple sugar called glucose. This sugar is the tree's food.

    * Oxygen Release: As a byproduct of photosynthesis, the leaves release oxygen back into the atmosphere.

So, the leaves are the "food factories" of the tree!
