  • Fungi's Closest Relatives: Animals, Not Plants – Explained
The kingdom of organisms most closely related to fungi is animals.

This might seem surprising, but it's true! While fungi and plants share some similarities, like being immobile and having cell walls, molecular evidence strongly suggests that fungi and animals are more closely related and share a common ancestor. This is supported by several factors, including:

    * Similar ribosomal RNA: The rRNA sequences of fungi and animals are more similar than those of fungi and plants.

    * Chitin: Both fungi and animals have chitin, a complex carbohydrate, in their cell walls or exoskeletons.

    * Flagella: Some fungi and animals have flagellated cells.

    * Shared biochemical pathways: Fungi and animals share many biochemical pathways that are not found in plants.

Therefore, while fungi are distinct organisms, their evolutionary history is more closely tied to animals than to plants.
