  • Understanding Microorganism Nomenclature: Beyond 'Microorganism'
    There's no single scientific name for a micro-organism. "Micro-organism" is a general term that refers to any organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye, including:

    * Bacteria: e.g. *Escherichia coli*

    * Viruses: e.g. *Influenza virus*

    * Fungi: e.g. *Candida albicans*

    * Protozoa: e.g. *Plasmodium falciparum*

    * Algae: e.g. *Chlamydomonas reinhardtii*

    Each of these groups has its own scientific classification system with specific names for individual species.
