  • Common Causes of STDs: Bacteria and Viruses
    STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases, are caused by a variety of organisms, primarily:

    Bacteria:

    * Chlamydia: *Chlamydia trachomatis*

    * Gonorrhea: *Neisseria gonorrhoeae*

    * Syphilis: *Treponema pallidum*

    * Chancroid: *Haemophilus ducreyi*

    * Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID): *Chlamydia trachomatis* and *Neisseria gonorrhoeae* are the most common causes.

    Viruses:

    * HIV/AIDS: Human immunodeficiency virus

    * Herpes: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) - types 1 and 2

    * Genital warts: Human papillomavirus (HPV)

    * Hepatitis B: Hepatitis B virus

    * Hepatitis C: Hepatitis C virus

    Parasites:

    * Trichomoniasis: *Trichomonas vaginalis*

    * Pubic lice ("crabs"): *Pthirus pubis*

    * Scabies: *Sarcoptes scabiei*

    It is important to note that some of these organisms can also be transmitted through other means, such as contact with infected blood or bodily fluids.
