  • Autotrophs: Defining Self-Feeding Organisms - Definition & Examples
    Organisms that make their own food are called autotrophs.

    Here's why:

    * Auto means "self"

    * Troph means "nourishment"

    So, autotrophs literally mean "self-nourishing". They don't rely on other organisms for food. Instead, they use energy from their surroundings to produce their own food.

    The most common example of autotrophs are plants, which use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into energy.
