  • Photosynthesis: Plants as Producers - Understanding Ecosystems
When a plant performs photosynthesis, it behaves as a producer.

    Here's why:

    * Producers are organisms that make their own food. They don't need to consume other organisms to get energy.

    * Photosynthesis is the process where plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create their own food (glucose) and release oxygen as a byproduct.

This means plants are the foundation of most ecosystems, providing energy and food for consumers (animals that eat plants) and decomposers (organisms that break down dead organisms).
