  • Sessile Organisms: Definition, Examples & Adaptations
Organisms that spend their entire adult lives attached to one spot are called sessile organisms.

    Some examples include:

    * Barnacles: These crustaceans attach themselves to rocks, boats, and other surfaces in the ocean.

    * Corals: These marine invertebrates form colonies and build reefs by secreting calcium carbonate.

    * Sponges: These filter-feeding animals are attached to rocks and other surfaces in both freshwater and saltwater environments.

    * Oysters: These bivalve mollusks attach themselves to hard surfaces in the ocean.

While some sessile organisms may move slightly, they are generally unable to move independently over long distances.
