  • Key Characteristics of Living Organisms: Metabolism & Adaptation
Here are two characteristics of living organisms that distinguish them from nonliving things:

    1. Metabolism: Living organisms carry out a complex set of chemical reactions to maintain life. This includes taking in energy, breaking down nutrients, building structures, and eliminating waste. Nonliving things do not have this metabolic activity.

    2. Adaptation and Evolution: Living organisms are capable of evolving over time, adapting to changes in their environment. This means they can inherit traits that help them survive and reproduce more successfully. Nonliving things do not have this capacity for change and adaptation.
