  • Origin of the Term 'Biology': Treviranus & Lamarck
The term "biology" is generally attributed to Gottfried Reinhold Treviranus and Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, who both used the term independently in 1802.

    * Treviranus used the term "Biologie" in his book "Biologie oder Philosophie der lebenden Natur" (Biology, or Philosophy of Living Nature).

    * Lamarck used the term "biologie" in his book "Recherches sur l'organisation des corps vivants" (Researches on the Organization of Living Bodies).

However, the term "biology" didn't become widely adopted until the mid-19th century.
