  • Robert Hooke: The Father of Cell Biology - Discovery & Significance
    The scientist who first described cells was Robert Hooke.

    In 1665, he used a microscope to observe a thin slice of cork and noticed small, box-like compartments that he named "cells" because they reminded him of the cells of a monastery.

    While Hooke didn't actually see living cells, his discovery laid the foundation for the development of cell theory, which states that all living organisms are composed of cells.
