  • Speciation: Understanding the Formation of New Species
The term that describes the result of plants and animals having offspring with completely new features is speciation.

    Here's why:

    * Speciation is the evolutionary process where new species arise from existing ones. This happens through gradual changes in the genetic makeup of a population over time.

    * Mutations are the source of these changes, introducing new genetic variations.

    * Natural selection favors individuals with traits that are better suited to their environment, leading to the accumulation of these variations in a population.

    * When these changes become significant enough, they can lead to the formation of a new species that is reproductively isolated from the original population.

Important Note: While offspring can inherit new combinations of traits from their parents, the term "completely new features" is not entirely accurate. New features arise from existing genetic material through mutations and recombination.
