  • Photoautotrophs: Harnessing Sunlight for Energy - Definition & Examples
    Organisms that change the energy in sunlight into food are called photoautotrophs.

    Here's why:

    * Photo refers to light.

    * Auto refers to self.

    * Troph refers to nourishment.

    So, photoautotrophs literally mean "self-nourishing with light". These organisms, primarily plants, algae, and some bacteria, use the process of photosynthesis to convert light energy into chemical energy in the form of glucose (sugar).
