Mitosis is a complex process that involves the separation of duplicated chromosomes into two identical nuclei. It is divided into four main phases:
* Prophase: The chromosomes condense and become visible, the nuclear envelope breaks down, and the spindle fibers form.
* Metaphase: The chromosomes line up at the center of the cell, attached to the spindle fibers.
* Anaphase: The sister chromatids of each chromosome are pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell.
* Telophase: The chromosomes reach the poles, the nuclear envelope reforms around each set of chromosomes, and the cytoplasm divides, resulting in two daughter cells.
After mitosis, the cell enters the cytokinesis stage, where the cytoplasm and organelles are divided to complete the formation of two separate cells.
