  • Predation's Impact on Population Size in Ecosystems
One biotic factor that affects the size of a population in an ecosystem is predation.

    Here's why:

    * Predators control prey populations: Predators hunt and consume prey animals. The number of predators in an ecosystem directly impacts the survival rate of prey species.

    * Balance in the ecosystem: Predation helps maintain a healthy balance in the ecosystem by preventing any one species from becoming overpopulated.

    * Population fluctuations: Predator-prey relationships often lead to cyclical fluctuations in population sizes. If prey numbers increase, predator populations may also grow. However, if predator numbers increase too much, prey populations may decline, leading to a decline in predator numbers as well.

Example: A population of wolves in a forest will directly affect the size of the deer population they prey on. If the wolf population is high, the deer population will be kept in check.
