  • Animal Cell Structures: Unique Components & Functions
Here are the cellular structures present ONLY in animal cells:

    * Centrioles: These small, cylindrical structures are involved in cell division, specifically the formation of microtubules that help separate chromosomes.

    * Lysosomes: These are membrane-bound organelles that contain enzymes capable of breaking down cellular waste products, pathogens, and even worn-out organelles.

    * Flagella: These long, whip-like structures are used for locomotion in some animal cells, particularly sperm cells.

    * Cilia: These are short, hair-like structures that can move in a coordinated manner to propel fluids or particles past the cell surface.

    * Gap Junctions: These specialized channels that connect adjacent animal cells, allowing for the direct exchange of small molecules and ions.

Important Note: While these structures are typically found only in animal cells, there are some exceptions. For example, some protists (unicellular organisms) may also have flagella or cilia.
