  • Louis Pasteur: Disproving Spontaneous Generation - A Scientific Breakthrough
The scientist primarily credited with disproving the theory of spontaneous generation is Louis Pasteur.

    Here's why:

    * Swan-Neck Flask Experiment: Pasteur's most famous experiment involved using swan-neck flasks. He boiled broth in these flasks, which allowed air to enter but trapped any airborne microorganisms in the neck. The broth remained sterile for long periods. When the necks were broken, the broth quickly became cloudy with microorganisms, demonstrating that they were not spontaneously generated but rather came from the air.

While Pasteur's work was pivotal, it wasn't the only evidence against spontaneous generation. Other scientists like Francesco Redi and Lazzaro Spallanzani also contributed important experiments in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, Pasteur's elegant swan-neck flask experiment solidified the understanding that life only arises from pre-existing life.
