  • The Nucleus: Where DNA Resides and Functions
    DNA is kept inside the nucleus of the cell.

    Here's why:

    * Protection: The nucleus acts as a protective barrier for the DNA, shielding it from the harsh environment of the cytoplasm.

    * Organization: DNA is tightly packaged within the nucleus, wound around proteins called histones, forming structures called chromosomes. This organization helps to keep the DNA organized and accessible for replication and transcription.

    There are a few exceptions:

    * Mitochondria and chloroplasts: These organelles also contain their own DNA, but it's separate from the nuclear DNA. This is because mitochondria and chloroplasts have their own unique functions and likely evolved from separate organisms.
