  • Bryophytes: The Dominant Group of Nonvascular Plants - Types & Characteristics
The largest group of nonvascular plants is the Bryophytes.

    Bryophytes include three main groups:

    * Mosses (Bryophyta): The most familiar and diverse group of bryophytes.

    * Liverworts (Marchantiophyta): Named for their often liver-shaped appearance.

    * Hornworts (Anthocerotophyta): Distinctive for their horn-shaped sporophytes.

While there are some other nonvascular plants, like the very primitive hornworts, the Bryophytes are by far the most numerous and widespread.
