  • Mitochondrial Membranes: Structure and Function
    Mitochondria are surrounded by two membranes:

    * Outer membrane: This membrane is smooth and permeable to small molecules.

    * Inner membrane: This membrane is highly folded into cristae, which increase its surface area. It is less permeable and contains many proteins involved in electron transport and ATP production.

    The space between these two membranes is called the intermembrane space, while the space enclosed by the inner membrane is called the matrix.
