  • Robert Hooke and the Discovery of the Cell: A Microscopic History
The scientist who coined the term "cell" after observing cork cells under a crude microscope was Robert Hooke.

In 1665, Hooke published his observations in his book "Micrographia". He described the small, box-like compartments he saw in cork as "cells" because they reminded him of the small rooms monks lived in, called "cells."

It's important to note that Hooke was only observing the cell walls of dead plant cells. He did not see the internal structures of a living cell.
