    The outermost covering of an animal cell is the plasma membrane.

    Here's why:

    * Cell Wall: Plant cells, fungi, and bacteria have a rigid cell wall outside the plasma membrane for structural support. Animal cells do not.

    * Plasma Membrane: This thin, flexible layer is essential for regulating what enters and exits the cell, maintaining its internal environment, and communicating with other cells. It's composed of a phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins.
