  • Mitochondria: The Powerhouse of Cellular Respiration - Cell Biology
The organelle responsible for cellular respiration is the mitochondrion.

    Here's why:

    * Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell. They are responsible for generating ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy currency of cells.

    * Cellular respiration occurs in four main stages: glycolysis, the transition reaction (or pyruvate oxidation), the Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation. Most of these stages happen within the mitochondria.

    * Mitochondria have their own DNA and ribosomes, further indicating their role in energy production.

While other organelles play roles in cellular processes, the mitochondria is the primary site for cellular respiration.
