  • DNA vs. RNA Sugars: Understanding Deoxyribose and Ribose
    DNA and RNA both use sugars, but they are different sugars:

    * DNA uses deoxyribose sugar. The "deoxy" part means that it has one less oxygen atom than ribose.

    * RNA uses ribose sugar.

    Both deoxyribose and ribose are five-carbon sugars (pentoses). The difference in the structure of these sugars is crucial for the different roles of DNA and RNA in the cell.
