1. Interphase: This is the longest phase of the cell cycle, where the cell grows and copies its DNA. Interphase is further subdivided into three stages:
* G1 Phase (First Gap): The cell grows and carries out normal metabolic activities.
* S Phase (Synthesis): The cell replicates its DNA, creating two identical copies of its genome.
* G2 Phase (Second Gap): The cell continues to grow and prepares for mitosis.
2. M Phase (Mitosis): This is the phase where the cell divides its nucleus and cytoplasm, resulting in two daughter cells. M phase is also further subdivided into two stages:
* Mitosis: The process of nuclear division, where the replicated chromosomes are separated into two identical sets.
* Cytokinesis: The division of the cytoplasm, which physically separates the two daughter cells.
Therefore, the two main parts of the cell cycle are Interphase and M Phase.
