  • Chromatids: Understanding DNA Replication and Cell Division
When chromosomes make an exact copy of themselves, they are called chromatids.

    Here's a breakdown:

    * Chromosome: A long, thread-like structure of DNA found in the nucleus of a cell. It carries genetic information.

    * Chromatid: One half of a duplicated chromosome. The two chromatids are identical copies of each other and are joined together at a point called the centromere.

    * Duplication: This process, known as replication, happens during the S phase of the cell cycle.

After replication, a chromosome consists of two identical chromatids. These chromatids remain attached at the centromere until they separate during cell division (mitosis or meiosis).
