  • Lichens: Understanding the Fungi-Algae Partnership
A plant that consists of both fungi and algae is called a lichen.

Lichen is not a single organism, but a symbiotic relationship between a fungus (the mycobiont) and an alga (the photobiont).

    * The fungus provides structure and protection for the alga.

    * The alga provides food through photosynthesis.

This mutually beneficial partnership allows lichens to thrive in harsh environments where neither organism could survive alone.
