Tubulin: The Key Protein Forming Microtubules in Cells
The protein that forms microtubules in the cell is tubulin.
Tubulin is a dimer composed of two subunits: alpha-tubulin and beta-tubulin. These dimers assemble head-to-tail to form protofilaments, and 13 protofilaments then associate laterally to create a hollow cylindrical structure called a microtubule.
