  • Haploid Cells: Definition, Examples, and Significance
A cell containing a single set of chromosomes and therefore only one copy of each gene is called a haploid cell.

    Here's why:

    * Haploid means "half" or "single".

    * Chromosomes carry genes, which are the units of heredity.

    * Diploid cells, like most of the cells in our bodies, have two sets of chromosomes (one from each parent).

    * Haploid cells have only one set of chromosomes.

    Examples of haploid cells include:

    * Sperm cells and egg cells (gametes) in animals.

    * Spores in plants and fungi.

These cells are involved in sexual reproduction, where they combine to form a diploid zygote.
