Here's how it forms:
1. Vesicles from the Golgi apparatus migrate to the center of the cell. These vesicles contain cell wall material.
2. The vesicles fuse together, forming a disk-like structure. This structure is called the cell plate.
3. The cell plate grows outwards, eventually merging with the existing cell walls. This divides the cytoplasm into two separate daughter cells.
4. New cell wall material is deposited on both sides of the cell plate, strengthening the division.
Key Differences from Animal Cells:
In animal cells, the cell membrane pinches inward to form a cleavage furrow, which eventually divides the cell into two. Plant cells have rigid cell walls, so they cannot use this method. Instead, they form a cell plate.
