This system, developed by Carl Linnaeus, uses two Latin words to name each species:

* Genus: The first word, capitalized, groups the species with other closely related organisms.

* Species: The second word, lowercase, specifically identifies the species within the genus.

For example, humans are *Homo sapiens*.
