    Plants that have nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots are called legumes.

    These bacteria, often of the genus *Rhizobium*, live in nodules on the roots of legumes and convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form usable by the plant. This process is called nitrogen fixation.
