  • Oxygen Producers: Cyanobacteria & Plants - How They Sustain Life
The two primary organisms responsible for producing oxygen in our atmosphere are:

    1. Cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae): These are single-celled organisms that perform photosynthesis, using sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (sugar) and oxygen. Cyanobacteria were crucial in the early Earth's atmosphere, eventually leading to the oxygen-rich atmosphere we have today.

    2. Plants: These multicellular organisms, including trees, flowers, and grasses, also perform photosynthesis, using sunlight to create their own food and releasing oxygen as a byproduct. While plants are newer to the Earth's history than cyanobacteria, they are responsible for a large proportion of the oxygen we breathe today.

It's important to note that other organisms, like some algae, also contribute to oxygen production, but cyanobacteria and plants are the two main players in this vital process.
