  • Lysosomes: The Cell's Digestive Powerhouse - Breakdown of Large Molecules
The cytoplasmic organelle that breaks down large food molecules is the lysosome.

    Here's why:

    * Lysosomes are membrane-bound organelles that contain powerful digestive enzymes. These enzymes can break down various biomolecules, including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids.

    * When food particles are taken into the cell (through processes like endocytosis), they are often enclosed within vesicles. These vesicles fuse with lysosomes, exposing the food molecules to the digestive enzymes.

    * The breakdown products of digestion are then released into the cytoplasm for the cell to use.

While other organelles like the mitochondria are involved in energy production, the lysosome is the primary organelle responsible for the breakdown of large food molecules.
